We welcome a very diverse cross section of applicants, ranging from freshly graduated college students to retirees. Minimum requirements are listed for each job, but the main requirement is that you are willing and able to learn the legislative process. We do perform background checks, and a criminal history may disqualify you from employment with the House. We strive for a safe environment for all Capitol employees and visitors.

Testimonials

“If you'd like to get a taste of politics, this is the perfect environment to work in.”

“It's fun and exciting to meet different people from all walks of life. The 60-day legislative session goes by in a flash!”

“As a session hire, I received the essential building blocks for office skills that I never had. As frivolous as typing memos or sorting files may be, I am glad I learned those skills for my job today as they are required for working with technical directors and other management staff. I would recommend anyone to take a chance and work as a session hire to develop their skills and build their contacts for future employment opportunities.”

“It's incredibly fulfilling to know that doing your job well means doing something good for the people of Hawaii.”

“Exciting, Frustrating, Entertaining, Monotonous, Unique, Stressful, Eventful, Hectic, Enlightening. Every day here is different, I'm always learning something new. Love it, hate it, somehow I keep coming back for more.”

“Working here, I've learned the importance of participating in Government; everyone has a part in making a successful government. It's not about just one person, but everyone working together to make a better life. Even if it's just going out to vote or to share an opinion, we all have a say.”

“A strong democracy requires well-informed and responsible citizens. After working here you realize that many of the issues we face are much more complex, and the opinions, voices and perspectives are immensely diverse. You'll never watch the news or read the newspapers in the same way again. We are here to do the people's work – for ALL the people of Hawaii.”

“Working at the Chief Clerk's Office was a great experience. I learned about the legislative process, and government in general. It helped prepare me for my career in journalism, but I recommend working at the Capitol, no matter what field you're going into.”

“Dramatically Entertaining...a MUST try!!!”

“Working at the Capitol is fun, exciting, hard work and very rewarding.”
