SENATE REPUBLICANS TO UNVEIL SPECIAL SESSION INITIATIVES TO DEAL WITH HAWAII'S ECONOMY IN LIGHT OF SEPT. 11, 2001
HONOLULU—Senate Republicans Sam Slom, Fred Hemmings, and Bob Hogue will hold a press conference on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at 10 AM in the Senate Minority Caucus Room in the chamber level of the State Capitol to unveil five measures known collectively as "The High Five for the 50th State's Economy."
The Republican package is a positive alternative to the governor's and majority party's package and consists of measures the Minority Caucus believes need to be included as part of the discussion on how to keep Hawaii's economy buoyant during these fiscally trying times. The Minority Caucus feels this five-bill package addresses some of the issues that the majority party has overlooked.
The Republican measures include: giving school principals the authority to determine repair and maintenance projects for their schools, allowing small business owners to claim unemployment compensation, capital gains tax exemptions, GET exemption on food and drugs, and a retail tax holiday.
The special session of the Legislature is slated for Oct. 22.
