HOUSE EDUCATION COMMITTEE TO VISIT SCHOOLS ON LANAI, MOLOKAI
The House Committee on Education is planning a three-day site visit to the islands of Lanai and Molokai to discuss education issues and inspect facilities, according to Rep. Ken Ito, committee chair. The committee will spend September 12 on Lanai and the next two days on Molokai.
"It's important that we see for ourselves what the needs and requirements are," Ito said. "We can make better decisions if we get out there and talk to faculty, parents and students in the different communities."
Lanai High & Elementary School will be the focus on September 12. On September 13, the committee will travel to Molokai and visit Kualapuu School, Molokai High & Intermediate, and Maunaloa School. The visit concludes on September 14 when the committee looks at Kilohana School and Kaunakakai School.
Ito said committee members will also be interested in seeing whether funds and legislation approved in prior years have had the intended impact.
In addition to Ito, members of the House Education Committee include representatives K. Mark Takai, vice chair, Felipe Abinsay, Dennis Arakaki, Kika Bukoski, Nestor Garcia, Helene Hale, Chris Halford, Michael P. Kahikina, Bob McDermott, Guy Ontai, Brian Schatz, Bud Stonebraker, and Roy Takumi.
Ito said the committee is considering additional site visits to other islands prior to the start of the 2001 Legislative Session.
