Honolulu, Hawaii
, 2026
RE: H.C.R. No. 101
H.D. 1
Honorable Nadine K. Nakamura
Speaker, House of Representatives
Thirty-Third State Legislature
Regular Session of 2026
State of Hawaii
Madame:
Your Committee on Culture & Arts, to which was referred H.C.R. No. 101 entitled:
"HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NOMINATING JOHN D. WAIHEʻE III FOR INDUCTION INTO THE ALOHA ORDER OF MERIT,"
begs leave to report as follows:
The purpose of this measure is to nominate John D. Waiheʻe III for induction into the Aloha Order of Merit.
Your Committee
received testimony in support of this measure from one individual.
Your Committee finds that John D. Waiheʻe III has rendered distinguished and
historic service to Hawaii, including becoming the first Native Hawaiian
elected governor of any state in the United States and elevating Hawaii's role
on the national and international stage. His leadership advanced significant
initiatives in education, health care, economic development, and Native
Hawaiian rights, while his contributions to the 1978 Constitutional Convention
helped shape modern governance in the State. Additionally, John D. Waiheʻe III has demonstrated lifelong
dedication to public service through continued civic engagement and leadership
beyond his tenure in office. Your
Committee therefore finds that he has achieved national and international
recognition and has brought great honor to the State, meeting the
qualifications for induction into the Aloha Order of Merit.
Your Committee has amended this measure by making technical, nonsubstantive amendments for the purposes of clarity, consistency, and style.
As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Culture & Arts that is attached to this report, your Committee concurs with the intent and purpose of H.C.R. No. 101, as amended herein, and recommends its adoption in the form attached hereto as H.C.R. No. 101, H.D. 1.
Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Culture & Arts,
