A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO STATEWIDE TRAFFIC CODE.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the number of traffic accidents and deaths on the Daniel K. Inouye highway is alarming. The legislature notes that the Hawaii police department reported that a significant majority of excessive speed citations and arrests this year have occurred along the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, evidencing the ongoing danger associated with speeding and reckless behavior on this roadway.
Accordingly, the purpose of this Act is to adopt a uniform maximum speed limit of fifty-five miles per hour along the entire length of the highway.
SECTION 2. Section 291C-106, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended to read as follows:
"[[]§291C-106[]] Speed limit for Daniel K. Inouye
highway. Notwithstanding any other
law to the contrary, the maximum speed limit for the Daniel K. Inouye
highway shall be [sixty] fifty‑five miles per hour [beginning
at mile marker 12; provided that the speed limit shall be forty-five miles per
hour or any other speed limit as determined pursuant to sections 291C-102,
291C-104, or 291C-105, beginning at the Pohakuloa training area and ending
one-half mile east of the Mauna Kea county park entrance]."
SECTION 3. Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed and stricken. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
