Madame:

 

     Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred S.B. No. 2657, S.D. 1, H.D. 1, entitled:

 

"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND RELATED DEMENTIAS RESEARCH,"

 

begs leave to report as follows:

 

     The purpose of this measure is to:

 

     (1)  Establish the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias Research Center of Hawaii (Research Center), to be administratively affiliated with the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), to focus on research, education, patient care, and community outreach and reflect an understanding of the ethnic, cultural, and environmental characteristics of the State and Pacific region;

 

     (2)  Require JABSOM, the Research Center, University of Hawaii Center on Aging, and University of Hawaii at Manoa to identify opportunities to capitalize on collaboration between the parties and maximize operational efficiencies;

 

     (3)  Require the Research Center to submit annual reports to the Legislature; and

 

     (4)  Appropriate funds to establish the Research Center, including for staffing.

 

     Your Committee received testimony in support of this measure from the State Health Planning and Development Agency; Hawaii Disability Rights Center; Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women; Disability and Communication Access Board; Hawaii Primary Care Association; Alzheimer's Association - Hawaiʻi; AARP Hawaiʻi; LeadingAge Pacific West; and six individuals.  Your Committee received comments on this measure from the University of Hawaiʻi System.

 

     As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Finance that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of S.B. No. 2657, S.D. 1, H.D. 1, and recommends that it pass Third Reading.
