Navigating the NIL Era in University of Hawaiʻi Athletics

The House Committee on Higher Education and the Senate Committee on Higher Education will hold a joint informational briefing to examine how the University of Hawaiʻi’s athletic programs are adapting to the rapidly changing landscape of college athletics in the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) era.

Since the NCAA’s 2021 policy change and the subsequent House v. NCAA settlement, college sports programs nationwide have faced significant shifts in how student-athletes may earn compensation for their name, image, and likeness. Hawaiʻi is among the states without a formal NIL statute, leaving the University of Hawaiʻi to navigate compliance and implementation within evolving national frameworks.

This briefing will provide legislators with a foundational understanding of NIL policy, its implications for the University of Hawaiʻi system, and how the institution is working to support student-athletes while maintaining fairness and integrity across programs.
