The purpose of this briefing is to inform and update the Committee and the public about the Pediatric Mental Health Care Access grant awarded to the Family Health Services Division of the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH). Through this five-year grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, the Department of Health seeks to develop and implement a Pediatric Mental Health Care model to support pediatricians and health care providers working with families of children and youth ages 3 to 21. Given the shortage of behavioral health providers in rural communities and limited service options available for families, Hawaii is working to promote behavioral health integration into pediatric primary care settings.
In year three of its grant cycle, the aims of this project are to: (1) increase the network of pediatric mental health teams; (2) provide trainings on early identification, diagnosis and treatment for children and youth mental health; (3) distribute information on timely mental health detection and supports available, and (4) increase access to mental health prevention and support in rural communities.
The following persons and/or organizations have been invited to participate in this briefing:
1. Matthew J. Shim, PhD, MPH, Chief, Family Health Services Division, Hawaii DOH;
2. Keiko Nitta, Children’s Specialist, Children with Special Health Needs Branch, Hawaii DOH;
3. Renzymeir Baloran, Pediatric Mental Health Care Access Coordinator, Hawaii DOH;
4. J. Gary Dela Cruz, MD, Pediatrician, Assistant Chair, Department of Pediatrics at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children;
5. Anthony P.S. Guerrero, MD, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Queen’s Health System; and
6. Justina Acevedo-Cross, M.P.P., Program Director, Community Grants and Initiatives, Hawaii Community Foundation.
No public testimony will be accepted.
