STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE RESOLUTION

requesting the city and county of honolulu to collaborate with the state to expand community gardening opportunities for residents.

WHEREAS, the ability to cultivate a garden has been proven to provide health benefits for people of all ages by reducing stress, providing a form of low intensity exercise, and increasing vitamin D production; and

WHEREAS, gardening can serve as a source of organic, healthy, and affordable food options for not only the gardeners, but their friends and family with whom they share their crops; and

WHEREAS, cities with large green spaces see a range of social benefits, such as reduction in air pollution, reduced heat, and more abundant wildlife; and

WHEREAS, in a city like Honolulu, where much of Oahu's population resides in condominiums and densely populated neighborhoods, community garden programs can serve as a respite from the loud noise and fast pace of city living; and

WHEREAS, community gardening has become increasingly popular in the City and County of Honolulu, with citizens recognizing the numerous benefits of cultivating their own food and engaging with nature; and

WHEREAS, demand for community garden spaces has rapidly outpaced available supply; and

WHEREAS, the Ala Wai Community Garden exemplifies this popularity, evidenced by its extensive waitlist of over one hundred fifty community members eager to participate in gardening activities and reap the health and wellness benefits it offers; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2024, that the City and County of Honolulu is requested to collaborate with the State to expand community gardening opportunities for residents; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources and Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu.
