THE SENATE

S.C.R. NO.

165

THIRTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE, 2024

STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

requesting the department of transportation to conduct a STUDY on the feasibility of bringing other airlines to the molokai airport.

WHEREAS, since January 2021, only one passenger airline has provided service to the general public out of Molokai Airport; and

WHEREAS, while the airline has done its best to accommodate the needs of passengers, including additional routes, flight times, and ordering larger planes, the cost of plane tickets remains prohibitive to many Molokai residents who need to travel for essential reasons, including work, medical appointments, and family; and

WHEREAS, in addition to costly ticket prices and limited flights, there are significant flight delays and cancellations that have caused undue burdens on Molokai residents; and

WHEREAS, this lack of dependable, accessible flights to major hubs such as Honolulu can potentially lead to health and safety issues for residents of rural communities; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2024, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Transportation is requested to study the feasibility of bringing additional airlines to the island of Molokai; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is requested to submit a report of its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2025; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Transportation.
