SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

Requesting the hawaii Professional chapter of the society of professional journalists to establish a process to evaluate and identify sources of news that adhere to ethical and objective journalistic standards to help the public distinguish those that may proliferate misinformation.

 

 


     WHEREAS, the Society of Professional Journalists and objective news adhere to a code of ethics and journalistic standards that can ensure objective reporting, truth, and prevent the spread of misinformation; and

 

     WHEREAS, the collapse of independent local media in the digital economy has seen legacy media consolidate and become increasingly more expensive to access for Americans and residents of the State; and

 

     WHEREAS, proliferation of social media has enabled some organizations and individuals with broad reach presenting themselves as news sources to intentionally or inadvertently spread misinformation, making it difficult for the average person to distinguish truth from fiction; and

 

     WHEREAS, the continued advancements in artificial intelligence have created a new tool to create and disseminate unverifiable information more easily than ever before; and

 

     WHEREAS, developing a way to recognize sources of news and information that adhere to ethical, objective, journalistic standards will help arm the public with a means to distinguish between truth and misinformation; and

 

     WHEREAS, with the rise and exacerbation of misinformation, other states and countries have established task forces, media literacy campaigns, and introduced legislation to mitigate the harmful effects of misinformation; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaii Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has a responsibility to ensure that information is reported with accuracy and objectivity that acts in accordance with ethical standards; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2024, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Hawaii Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is requested to establish a process to evaluate and identify sources of news that adhere to ethical and objective journalistic standards to help the public distinguish those that may proliferate misinformation; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President of the Hawaii Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
