requesting the governor to take any actions necessary to reestablish aN INTERISLAND ferry system in the state.
WHEREAS, Hawaii is an archipelago comprising one hundred thirty-seven islands, six of which have major population centers; and
WHEREAS, residents of, and visitors to, the State rely primarily on aircraft for inter-island transportation; and
WHEREAS, between December 2007 and July 2009, residents and visitors were provided an additional option for interisland transportation: the Hawaii Superferry; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Superferry was a high-speed ferry service that efficiently transported persons and property, including motor vehicles, between the islands of Maui and Oahu; and
WHEREAS, reestablishing an interisland ferry system in the State would provide residents of, and visitors to, the State with an efficient, cost-friendly alternative to air and barge transportation between the islands; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2024, that the Governor is requested to take any actions necessary to reestablish an interisland ferry system in the State; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor and Director of Transportation.
