HOUSE RESOLUTION

honoring and commending JUDGE MICHAEL A. TOWN for his lifetime ACHIEVEMENTS and expressing its deepest gratitude for his service to the State of Hawaiʻi.

WHEREAS, JUDGE MICHAEL A. TOWN earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of California-Hastings College of the Law and Master of Laws from Yale Law School; and

WHEREAS, as an attorney, JUDGE MICHAEL A. TOWN served as the Lead Counsel at Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi, representing the plaintiffs in the Aluli v. Brown case, which resulted in the end of bombing of Kahoʻolawe island; and

WHEREAS, committed to upholding justice and safeguarding the rights of all individuals, JUDGE MICHAEL A. TOWN served on the Hawaiʻi Judiciary Restorative Justice Committee and Committee on Jury Innovations and was appointed to the Hawaiʻi Correctional System Oversight Commission at its inception in 2019; and

WHEREAS, as an adjunct law professor, JUDGE MICHAEL A. TOWN taught family law, juvenile law, environmental law, and legal methods at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa William S. Richardson School of Law; he published several articles in national judicial magazines and journals and presented at numerous workshops and seminars to judges locally, nationally, and internationally; and

WHEREAS, in 2010, JUDGE MICHAEL A. TOWN retired after over thirty years of service as a trial judge, fourteen years in the Family Court, and sixteen years in the Circuit Court, including three years as Senior Judge of the Family Court; and

WHEREAS, JUDGE MICHAEL A. TOWN remains active in the community, serving on the board of directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaiʻi, Positive Coaching Alliance – Hawaii, and Hawaiʻi Children's Trust Fund; and

WHEREAS, throughout his esteemed career on the bench, JUDGE MICHAEL A. TOWN has exhibited the utmost integrity, fairness, and compassion, earning the respect and admiration of his peers, colleagues, and the community at large; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaiʻi, Regular Session of 2024, that this body hereby honors and commends JUDGE MICHAEL A. TOWN for his lifetime achievements, expresses its deepest gratitude for his service to the State of Hawaiʻi, and extends to him its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
