HOUSE RESOLUTION
congratulating the University of Hawaiʻi at
Mānoa's Center for Japanese Studies Way of Tea Center on JAKU'AN's 50th
anniversary.
WHEREAS, JAKU'AN (寂庵),
"hut of tranquility", is a traditional Japanese tea house set in the
Sei'en (清苑),
"garden of purity", that has been on the University of Hawaiʻi at
Mānoa (UH) campus since 1972, where it has helped transmit Japanese
culture and aesthetics beyond the borders of Japan to Hawaiʻi; and
WHEREAS, JAKU'AN has been the location for
the lessons and practice of the UH Way of Tea Club, founded in 1967, providing
thousands of UH students with the opportunity to become acquainted with the
Japanese Way of Tea, chanoyu (茶の湯), one of
Japan's most important cultural traditions that has influenced the country's
art, architecture, philosophy, cuisine, letters, literature, and even politics
for centuries; and
WHEREAS, this time-honored structure was
erected after Dr. Genshitsu Sen, formerly Sen Sōshitsu, the 15th
generation Grand Tea Master of the Urasenke Chadō Tradition, commissioned the building of JAKU'AN with its
materials and craftspersons all brought over from Japan; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sen has introduced the world to
Chadō, "The Way of Tea", and
donated the structure together with endowed funding to UH to carry out his
life's mission of fostering "peacefulness through a bowl of tea" and,
along with the Urasenke Hawaiʻi Foundation, continues to support
and advocate for JAKU'AN;
and
WHEREAS, in 2023, Dr. Sen celebrated his 100th
birthday and continues to educate students in Hawaiʻi and
promote worldwide understanding and peace through the teaching of tea ceremony
and JAKU'AN; now,
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by The
House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaiʻi, Regular
Session of 2024, that this body hereby congratulates the University of Hawaiʻi at
Mānoa's Center for Japanese Studies Way of Tea Center on JAKU'AN's 50th
anniversary, honors its role in fostering peace through the Chadō practice, commemorates the 100th birthday
of Dr. Genshitsu Sen, commends the Urasenke Hawaiʻi
Foundation for their sustaining support for JAKU'AN, and expresses its warmest
aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
