HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the city and county of honolulu to establish a new police substation in mililani to increase police presence in the mililani community.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Mililani is one of the largest residential communities of Oahu; and

 

     WHEREAS, Central Oahu between Mililani Town and Waipio has seen several new residential developments in recent years; and

 

     WHEREAS, according to the United States Census Bureau data, the population of Mililani grew from 2010 to 2020, reaching nearly 50,000; and

 

     WHEREAS, the population growth has resulted in a corresponding rise in crime, with many residents reporting concern about the increase in and severity of crime; and

 

     WHEREAS, the latest crime statistics provided by the Honolulu Police Department indicate that Central Oahu saw a seven per cent increase in aggravated assaults; and

 

     WHEREAS, a series of high-profile violent crimes in Mililani has prompted residents and business owners to call for a greater police presence in the area; and

 

     WHEREAS, requests for increased police presence in Mililani have been overlooked and calls for a new police substation in Mililani have not been fulfilled; and

 

     WHEREAS, Mililani is part of the Honolulu Police Department District 2, which services Mililani, Mililani Mauka, Waipio Acres, Kunia, Wahiawa, Whitmore, Waialua, Haleiwa, Waimea, and Sunset Beach; and

 

     WHEREAS, despite the large patrol area, District 2 has the lowest number of patrol subdivisions to which officers in a vehicle are assigned; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Honolulu Police Department currently operates a single police station, the Wahiawa District Station, in the entire District 2 area; and

 

WHEREAS, the police substations are located in other patrol districts to provide improved police response and other services to the communities; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Honolulu Police Department's presence in Mililani must be expanded to reflect population growth and residential development and to appropriately respond to increased reports of crime in the area; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2024, the Senate concurring, that the City and County of Honolulu is urged to establish a new police substation to be built in Mililani to increase police presence and improve response times; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the City and County of Honolulu and the Honolulu City Council are requested to support additional funding and resources to create the Mililani police substation; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, Councilmembers of the Honolulu City Council, Chief of the Honolulu Police Department, and Chair of the Honolulu Police Commission.
