A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

PROPOSING AN AMENDMENT TO ARTICLE XI OF THE HAWAII CONSTITUTION TO REQUIRE THE STATE TO support and facilitate the expeditious construction and completion of A THIRTY METER TELESCOPE ON THE SUMMIT OF MAUNA KEA ON THE ISLAND OF HAWAII.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Article XI of the Constitution of the State of Hawaii is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"THIRTY METER TELESCOPE

     Section    .  The support of astronomy, consistent with the protection of natural resources and respect of cultural practices, is a policy of the State.

     The State shall support and facilitate the expeditious construction and completion of a Thirty Meter Telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii."

     SECTION 2.  The question to be printed on the ballot shall be as follows:

     "Shall the Constitution of the State of Hawaii be amended to require the State to support and facilitate the expeditious construction and completion of a Thirty Meter Telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii?"

     SECTION 3.  New constitutional material is underscored.

     SECTION 4.  This amendment shall take effect upon compliance with article XVII, section 3, of the Constitution of the State of Hawaii.
