      Status & Testimony

RELATING TO MEDICAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING.

Reestablishes the Hawaii medical education special fund to enable the John A. Burns School of Medicine, in consultation with the Hawaii Medical Education Council, to provide funding for medical education and training in Hawaii, with an emphasis on supporting residency training in medically underserved areas.  Appropriates moneys to create more residencies and training opportunities in medically underserved areas for medical students at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine.  Appropriates funds to the John A. Burns School of Medicine to create further medical residency and training opportunities through a partnership between the John A. Burns School of Medicine and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

RELATING TO MEDICAL RESIDENCY PROGRAMS.

Appropriates moneys to support and expand physician residency training programs in state teaching hospitals.  Requires dollar‑for-dollar matching funds from private funding sources.

RELATING TO MENTAL HEALTH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII.

Appropriates funds to the University of Hawaii at Manoa to establish three additional permanent mental health practitioner positions within the Division of Student Success' Counseling and Student Development Center.

RELATING TO HEALTH CARE EDUCATION.

Appropriates funds for the expansion of the certified nurse aide to practical nurse bridge program at the University of Hawaii Maui college, including funding for instructional costs and student aid.

Appropriates funds to support and expand the mental health technician certificate of competence program through the hiring of a mental health technician certificate program coordinator, establishment of a scholarship program, and any other necessary administrative costs.

RELATING TO LOAN REPAYMENT FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS.

Appropriates funds to the Department of Health for the Hawaii State Loan Repayment Program administered through the John A. Burns School of Medicine, subject to a matching funds requirement.
