SENATE RESOLUTION

Urging the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Development Division to conduct and publish a study on protein consumption in the State.

WHEREAS, the State's policymakers and business community rely upon agricultural production data published by the United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service; and

WHEREAS, this data is inexhaustive, disaggregated by state and county but not by island, and lacking information concerning consumption; and

WHEREAS, agricultural production and consumption data disaggregated by island would benefit the State by informing the policy research, budgeting, investments, and infrastructure planning of policymakers, food banks, and businesses in the State; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2023, that the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Development Division is urged to conduct and publish a study on protein consumption in the State that utilizes and supplements the United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service 2023 Census of Agriculture data; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the study is requested to:

(1) Include the amount of livestock, poultry, aquaculture, and seafood, including wild-caught seafood, consumed in the State, disaggregated by island; and

(2) Present data in a Hawaii-focused, user-accessible manner; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Agriculture is requested to submit the study to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2025; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Agriculture.
