HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

URGING THE GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN TO TEMPORARILY HALT THE PLANNED RELEASE OF FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI NUCLEAR POWER PLANT'S WASTEWATER INTO THE PACIFIC OCEAN.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, nuclear power is sometimes a viable source of electricity for a nation; and

 

     WHEREAS, nuclear power plants must nevertheless be operated in a safe manner; and

 

     WHEREAS, the planned release of wastewater from a defunct nuclear power plant in Fukushima, Japan may pose an environmental threat on a potentially global scale; and

 

     WHEREAS, a scientific review of a toxicology report for the plant is vital to protect the environment in Japan and worldwide; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2023, that the government of Japan is urged to halt the planned release of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant's wastewater into the Pacific Ocean until a group of high-level, experienced, independent, and impartial scientists has received and reviewed a toxicology report for the plant; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the United States Ambassador to Japan is requested to discuss this issue with the Ambassador of Japan to the United States of America; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the President of the House of Councillors and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, National Diet of Japan; Prime Minister of Japan; Ambassador of Japan to the United States of America; United States Ambassador to Japan; Majority Leader of the United States Senate; Speaker of the United States House of Representatives; and members of Hawaii's congressional delegation.
