HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the governor to take any actions necessary to reestablish aN INTERISLAND ferry system in the state.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Hawaii is an archipelago comprising one hundred thirty-seven islands, six of which have major population centers; and

 

     WHEREAS, residents of, and visitors to, the State rely primarily on air transportation for inter-island transportation; and

 

     WHEREAS, between December 2007 and July 2009, residents and visitors were provided an additional option of interisland transportation:  the Hawaii Superferry; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaii Superferry was a high-speed ferry service that efficiently transported persons and property, including motor vehicles, between the islands of Maui and Oahu; and

 

     WHEREAS, reestablishing an interisland ferry system in the State would provide residents of, and visitors to, the State with an efficient, cost-friendly alternative to air and barge transportation between the islands; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2023, the Senate concurring, that the Governor is requested to take any actions necessary to reestablish an interisland ferry system in the State; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor and Director of Transportation.
