A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to the john a. burns school of medicine.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 

     SECTION 1.  Chapter 304A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§304A-     John A. Burns school of medicine; resident and nonresident tuition fees; service commitment.  (a)  Notwithstanding any law to the contrary, any student who pays resident tuition fees at the John A. Burns school of medicine shall work in the State for at least five years within the ten years immediately following the student's graduation from the John A. Burns school of medicine.

     (b)  If the student fails to meet the requirement of subsection (a), the student shall repay to the University of Hawaii the difference between the resident tuition fee and nonresident tuition fee for each year or fraction thereof that the student fails to meet the requirement.

     (c)  The board of regents shall adopt rules pursuant to chapter 91 to implement this section."

     SECTION 2.  This Act does not affect rights and duties that matured, penalties that were incurred, and proceedings that were begun before its effective date.

     SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
