Congratulations to Machaela Thompson!
Every year, one graduating senior from every public high school in Hawaii is selected as a Citizenship Award Recipient. This award is presented to the student who best exemplifies citizenship in school and in the community. I would like to congratulate Michaela Thompson of King Kekaulike High School on receiving the 2013 Citizen Award, and to commend her on her academic achievements and community contributions.

Congratulations to Miss Aloha Hula, Manalani Mili Hookoana English!
This year the Merrie Monarch Festival celebrated its 50th anniversary. Helping to make this year extraordinarily exciting, Manalani Mili Hookoana English of Upcountry Maui was selected as this year's Miss Aloha Hula. I would like to congratulate our 2013 Miss Aloha Hula, Manalani English, on her achievements and wish her the best in her hula endeavors.

2013 Bizarre Bazaar
On April 8, 2013, Maui legislators teamed up to host a fundraiser, the "Bizarre Bazaar," for the Maui Foodbank. The event featured plate lunches, baked goods, fresh produce, plants, protea, door prizes, a silent auction, and many other items for sale. This year, we were able to raise over $2,400. Representative Yamashita's office has been coordinating the annual fundraiser since 2006.

2013 Pet Project
Representative Yamashita spearheaded a "Pet Project" once again at the capitol. From March 1 to April, his office collected 115 pounds of dry cat food, 134 cans of wet cat food, 334 pounds of dry dog food, 19 cans of wet dog food, 73 pounds of cat litter, 23 packages of dog treats, 9 packages of cat treats, 1 box of toys, 1 box of tennis balls, and a variety of other items including towels, sheets, ear wipes, food and water dishes, grooming supplies, collars, leashes, pet beds, and scratching posts.

King Kekaulike High School Recognized for Exceptional Achievement
The Hawaii State Department of Education has awarded $1 Million to schools recognized for significant academic progress for two consecutive years. King Kekaulike High School was among the thirty-two schools that received a one-time grant to further improvements. The school was awarded $25,000 for finishing in the top 5 percent in both reading and math growth.

House Approves State Budget
The House of Representatives voted to approve HB200 HD1 which appropriates funds for operating and capital improvement costs of the Executive Branch for the next biennium fiscal years FY2013-2014 and FY2014-2015.
