Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred S.B.
No. 1221, S.D. 2, H.D. 1, entitled:
"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO HEALTH,"
begs leave to report as follows:
The purpose of this measure is to help
students with diabetes better manage their condition and receive the same
access to educational opportunities as other students by requiring the
Department of Education to establish procedures for the care of students with
diabetes during regular school hours and school-related activities and ensuring
that school employees and qualified volunteers are properly trained to provide
care to students with diabetes.
The American Diabetes Association -
Hawaii, Times Supermarket, Hawaii Chapter of the American Academy of
Pediatrics, and many individuals provided testimony in support of this
measure. The Department of Education provided testimony in opposition. The
Department of Health, Hawaii State Teachers’ Association, State Public Charter
School Commission, and an individual provided comments.
As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of
your Committee on Finance that is attached to this report, your Committee is in
accord with the intent and purpose of S.B. No. 1221, S.D. 2, H.D. 1, and
recommends that it pass Third Reading.
