Three Kaiser High School graduates are working to overcome voter apathy and get their classmates at the University of Hawaii more involved in solving local and global issues, starting with getting them to vote.

The year-old, 30-member UH-Manoa club called Daniel K. Inouye Leaders in Action grew out of Hawaii's 2014 general election, which had an all-time low voter turnout of 52.3 percent of registered voters, said Lisa Shirota, communications officer for UH's College of Social Sciences.

"This worrisome trend spurred DKI Leaders in Action members to pursue innovative ways of tackling critical issues facing the state, such as housing, job creation, sustainability, economics and tourism," Shirota said.

At a commuter campus, the members of the club believe that busy UH students want to be more engaged but simply don’t know how.

"More than apathy, I feel that students do care but they don't know where to start or how to implement their ideas," said Esther Choi, a 19-year-old UH sophomore who is studying both Korean and political science and wants to become an environmental lawyer. "This club is perfect for that."

Choi had been student body treasurer and student body president at Kaiser, where she "tried to get the students engaged," adding, "We did a lot of student-driven activities, and I wanted to continue that in college."

But Choi could not find a vehicle at UH to get more involved in community and global issues, especially environmental sustainability.

Sisters Kelly and Sally Park recruited Choi — along with Kaley Tengan, a 22-year-old economics senior, and Rio Kwon,
<a10:updated>2015-12-16T11:04:00-10:00</a10:updated>

Live, Learn, Work, Play

Live, Learn, Work, Play (UPDATED 12-15-2015)
<a10:updated>2015-12-15T10:42:00-10:00</a10:updated>

Crews to survey Mililani Mauka for little fire ants

Originally published by Hawaii News Now; click here to read the article on hawaiinewsnow.com.

MILILANI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Crews will be surveying the Mililani Mauka neighborhood on Thursday for little fire ants, an area that was infested last year.

A team will be checking the six-acre zone between Auina and Kopalani Streets by setting baits – vials containing peanut butter – and collecting ants for identification.

Since the detection in June 2014, the area was treated eight times with pesticides and bait formulas, the state Department of Agriculture said.

No ants were found when crews surveyed the neighborhood earlier this year.
<a10:updated>2015-12-03T13:54:00-10:00</a10:updated>

Bytemarks Café: New STEM Education Programs

Senator Donovan Dela Cruz and Hawaiʻi Department of Education Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi appear on Hawaiʻi Public Radio program Bytemarks Caf&#233 to talk about a regional approach to STEM called "Live, Learn, Work & Play"; click here to listen to their segment, which begins at 19:58.
<a10:updated>2015-11-30T10:56:00-10:00</a10:updated>

Live, Learn, Work, Play

Live, Learn, Work, Play (UPDATED 11-16-2015)
<a10:updated>2015-11-23T14:45:00-10:00</a10:updated>

Karsten Thot Bridge to close for repair work, new height limit

Originally published by KITV; click here to read the article on kitv.com.

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Department of Transportation is advising Oahu motorists that all lanes will be closed on Kamehameha Highway in both directions between Whitmore Avenue and Kilani Avenue at the Karsten Thot Bridge on Monday, Nov. 23, and Tuesday, Nov. 24, from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., for preparation work for the repair and repaint project.

The Karsten Thot Bridge height clearance will be lowered to 12 feet beginning Monday, Nov. 30 through May 2016. Construction includes steel bridge frame repairs, concrete crack and spall repairs, replacement of steel bridge railings and repainting. Emergency vehicles, first responders and TheBus have been notified and will be allowed through if the vehicle height is less than 12 feet. Electronic message boards will be deployed to inform motorists of the new height restriction.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow for extra travel time and use alternate routes such as Wilikina Drive.

HDOT appreciates the public's cooperation as we continue to ensure the safety of our roadways.
