Act 130, SLH 2012, established a new public charter school law for the State of Hawaii, created the State Public Charter School Commission as the statewide authorizer of charter schools, and required that the charter school contract through which the Commission authorizes charter schools be based on a performance framework that sets forth the academic, financial, organizational, and operational performance indicators under which the Commission will evaluate the schools. In June of 2014, the Commission entered into a three-year contract with the then-existing charter schools.
The purpose of the informational briefing is to hear from the Commission about the proposed criteria for determining whether and for what length of term a charter school will be eligible for a new charter contract upon the expiration of the current charter contract in June of 2017.
The State Public Charter School Commission is an agency administratively attached to the Department of Education and is statutorily tasked with authorizing high-quality charter schools throughout the state.
