Representative Heather Haunani Giugni was appointed by Governor Neil Abercrombie on February 16, 2012, to fill the vacant seat for District 33, serving `Aiea, Halawa Valley, Halawa Heights, and `Aiea Heights. She took the oath of office six days later before a large crowd of exuberant supporters from the district and beyond.

A third generation `Aiea resident, Representative Giugni was called to serve by constituents in her district and accepted the mid-session appointment because of her deep concern for the needs and well-being of her community. Her life-long commitment to education, technology, media, arts and culture, agriculture and sustainability will guide her consideration of legislation affecting her district and the state. At the top of her list: securing the nearly $2 million dollars needed to complete construction and ensure energy self-sufficiency of the long-awaited new `Aiea Public Library.

House Speaker Calvin Say addressed the body during Rep. Giugni's swearing in, saying, "The House welcomes Heather Giugni and looks forward to working with the new representative for the 2012 legislative session. Rep. Giugni has demonstrated her commitment to the community through her work in media, political and cultural projects. I believe she will bring an interesting and valuable perspective to the legislature."

Rep. Giugni is the granddaughter of Kealoha & Alfred Giugni and Edward & Henriette Austen, and the daughter of Henry & Muriel Roselani Giugni. She is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools and she received a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of Maryland.
