A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO TELECOMMUNICATIONS.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Chapter 489J, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§489J- Cellular phone service contracts; duration. (a) Beginning January 1, 2013, a new contract or a renewal of an existing contract for cellular phone service with a person or entity that is authorized by the Federal Communications Commission to provide facilities-based commercial mobile radio service within the State shall not exceed a period of one year from the time of purchase; provided that the contract may be renewed in one-year increments thereafter.
(b) As used in this section, "cellular phone" includes a portable phone that uses wireless technology to send and receive phone signals."
SECTION 2. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
