Description:

Requires the names of transit station in any mass transit system in the State to consist of Hawaiian names, words, or phrases.  Prohibits transit stations in using the same name as any existing name as any existing commercial entity or establishment.

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to mass transit.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

     SECTION 1.  Chapter 51, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§51-  Mass transit stations; names. The names of all mass transit stations in any mass transit system established in the State shall consist of Hawaiian names, words, or phrases, and each name shall be selected with a view to the appropriateness of the name to historic, cultural, scenic, and topographical features of the area; provided that no transit station subject to this section shall bear the name of a commercial entity or enterprise."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
