honoring dr. young k. paik on the OCCASION of his retirement from the st. francis medical center after 37 years of active and dedicated medical practice.
WHEREAS, Hawaii residents enjoy healthy, balanced lifestyles, thanks to the efforts of the State's dedicated, compassionate, and highly-qualified medical professionals; and
WHEREAS, DR. YOUNG K. PAIK is a nationally-renowned medical physician, known for being part of the team of physicians who performed the first successful kidney transplant and later the first successful bone marrow transplant in Hawaii at the St. Francis Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, with DR. YOUNG K. PAIK part of the St. Francis Transplant Team, the hospital has moved the state forward in providing life-saving care to residents, having performed more than 900 successful organ and bone marrow transplants; and
WHEREAS, with a constant vision for better and more efficient care, DR. YOUNG K. PAIK partnered with the UCLA transplant program and created a dedicated lab service to perform tissue typing and immunological support and committed to continually upgrade the lab as new technology and research developed; and
WHEREAS, continuing to recognize the life-saving successes in bone marrow transplantation, DR. YOUNG K. PAIK led the way in establishing the non-profit Hawaii Bone Marrow Registry at St. Francis Medical Center in 1969, which now has more than 67,000 registered donors on file, including the largest percentage of Asian and Pacific Islanders in its database; and
WHEREAS, DR. YOUNG K. PAIK's achievements in tissue typing and immunological support also led to successful pioneering of heart, liver, and pancreas transplants; and
WHEREAS, the efforts of DR. YOUNG K. PAIK have extended the lives of numerous patients diagnosed with life-threatening diseases; and
WHEREAS, after 37 years in active and dedicated medical practice, of which 23 years were spent as head of St. Francis Medical Center's clinical laboratory program, DR. YOUNG K. PAIK will step down to enjoy retirement and travels with his wife, Beris; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2006, that this body hereby honors and commends DR. YOUNG K. PAIK for his stellar achievements in medicine and healthcare, and extends its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
