HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

RECOGNIZING AND HONORING PRINCE DAVID KAWANANAKOA MIDDLE SCHOOL ON ITS DIAMOND JUBILEE ANNIVERSARY.

WHEREAS, Kawananakoa Middle School is one of the finest and largest middle schools in Hawaii and has maintained a high level of quality in its instructional programs and in graduating students of consistent excellence; and

WHEREAS, Kawananakoa Middle School has enriched the lives of the State by providing a high quality of education in a socially diverse environment, using the concepts of individual initiative and responsibility as an integral part of the Kawananakoa Middle School philosophy; and

WHEREAS, Kawananakoa Middle School has always maintained a positive public image with outstanding programs for its students and a school climate conducive to teaching and learning; and

WHEREAS, the school was dedicated to the memory of Crown Prince David Laamea Kahalepouli Kawananakoa Piikoi, who contributed so much to the civic affairs of his people, and who, together with his wife, Princess Abigail Wahiikaahuula Campbell, also known as Princess Kawananakoa, were ardent supporters of Kawananakoa Middle School; and

WHEREAS, the Legislature recalls with gratitude and appreciation the many contributions made by Prince David Kawananakoa to the well-being of Hawaii and its people and for the development of this school; and

WHEREAS, Prince David Kawananakoa Middle School is the only school in Hawaii named for living Hawaii royalty; and

WHEREAS, Prince David Kawananakoa Middle School, currently celebrating its Diamond Jubilee year, began in 1927 as a laboratory school within the Territorial Department of Public Instruction, when the former Fort Street School was selected for the site and renamed the Kawananakoa Experimental School; and

WHEREAS, in its seventy-five-year history, Kawananakoa Middle School has produced many outstanding citizens of Hawaii, including the late Reverend Abraham Akaka, current United States Senator Daniel K. Akaka, businessman Dennis Taira, Ambassador of Aloha Danny Kaleikini, members of the Hawaii State Legislature, and many others who have prospered in all walks of life; and

WHEREAS, to commemorate this Diamond Jubilee, on February 18 the Kawananakoa Middle School held a commemorative service for Prince David Kawananakoa at the Royal Mausoleum, with special guests in attendance, including the Marquesa Kapiolani Kawananakoa Marignoli and prominent Kawananakoa graduates, including United States Senator Daniel K. Akaka; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2003, that this body extends its aloha to and commends the students, teachers, and staff of Kawananakoa Middle School, thanks the many friends, patrons, and benefactors who over the years have contributed so much to the welfare and progress of Kawananakoa Middle School, and wishes Kawananakoa Middle School much success in the future.
