commending and congratulating ed chevy for his leadership and community spirit.
WHEREAS, the richness and diversity of our State are due in large part to the invaluable personal contributions and meritorious acts of individuals who are committed to enhancing the community through their leadership and talents; and
WHEREAS, ED CHEVY, who became deaf when he was 3 years old and was raised in a deaf family where sign language was his first language, has since become an accomplished entertainer and an educator; and
WHEREAS, as a dedicated deaf educator, ED CHEVY is an American Sign Language music and storytelling instructor at Kapiolani Community College and is also a specialist teaching in the Shared Reading Project to young deaf children, in addition to his involvement in many other educational projects; and
WHEREAS, ED CHEVY has volunteered his time to conduct leadership training, is a tremendous role model for the young deaf and hard-of-hearing students around the Pacific Rim, and is a board member of various deaf organizations in Hawaii including the Mayor's Committee on People with Disabilities; and
WHEREAS, ED CHEVY is also a celebrated performer and has been in the entertainment industry for 35 years, and is most notably a member of the acclaimed Beethoven's Nightmare, America's only all-deaf rock-and-roll band; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2003, that this body hereby commends and congratulates ED CHEVY for his leadership, community spirit, and accomplishments in the deaf community, and extends a warm mahalo to him for his contributions to society, and wishes him continued joy and success.
