SENATE RESOLUTION

 

requesting the honolulu city council to support the construction of a modified kuakini street extension.

 

WHEREAS, the current alignment of the intersection of Kuakini Street and Lanakila Avenue is hazardous and unsafe for both motorists and pedestrians; and

WHEREAS, the intersection is heavily used by the students and parents of Lanakila Elementary School and by the senior citizens of the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center; and

WHEREAS, Vision Team #12 has proposed to construct a modified Kuakini Street extension at the intersection to eliminate the hazards; and

WHEREAS, the project involves completing a standard four-legged intersection and tying it back to Keola Street where the Weinberg Senior Residence begins; and

WHEREAS, additionally, the project would beautify the remaining area to serve as an attractive entryway to the neighborhood; and

WHEREAS, the Liliha/Alewa/Puunui/Kamehameha Heights Neighborhood Board No. 14 has unanimously passed a motion to support this project for the safety of the community; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Land and Natural Resources which currently owns the land the extension would pass through has indicated its willingness to convey the land to the City and County for this project; and

WHEREAS, the project has been on the City's Detailed Land Use Map since the 1960s while the traffic volume has only increased; and

WHEREAS, many will benefit from this improvement, including Lanakila Elementary School, Maluhia Hospital, the Weinberg Senior Residence, Lanakila Health Center, Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center, Lanakila District Park, St. Theresa's Parish and School, Higashi Hongwanji Mission, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Preschool, the Kuakini Street Fire Department and other emergency units; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-First Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that the Honolulu City Council is requested to support the funding for the Vision Team #12 proposal to construct a modified Kuakini Street extension; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Mayor and Council of the City and County of Honolulu.
