H.R. NO. |

TWENTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2002 |
||
STATE OF HAWAII |
||
REquesting the establishment of an agricultural tourism task force.
WHEREAS, the intersection of agriculture and tourism is one of tourism's "niche" markets; it creates a multidisciplinary activity which benefits Hawaii economically and provides new and expanded income benefits for both industries as has been documented in an October 19, 2001, research paper done by the Hawaii Agricultural Statistics Service and funded by the Hawaii Tourism Authority; and
WHEREAS, key sites and events that involve both tourism and agriculture, such as overnight accommodations at farms and ranches and educational tours in agricultural areas, should be identified and systematically developed; and
WHEREAS, the chefs of Hawaii have greatly contributed to the development and marketing of "Pacific Cuisine" by using locally grown agricultural products, and Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau promotions traditionally include the distribution of free sample packs of Hawaii-grown agricultural products ranging from macadamia nuts to Kona coffee to local floral products; and
WHEREAS, marketing and development support is essential to the success of these kinds of efforts, including a public education campaign to understand tourism-related activities and agricultural land uses, visitor-oriented business training for ranchers and farmers, interpretive training for guides, development of community-based interpreters relating to Hawaii’s agricultural industry and commodities, and collaborative marketing to ensure a broader understanding of agricultural regulations; and
WHEREAS, there is a pressing need to examine marketing methodologies between agricultural commodities and leisure destinations to determine similarities and differences and areas where collaborative efforts could benefit both industries; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that the Hawaii Tourism Authority establish an Agricultural Tourism Task Force to examine ways and means that agricultural activities and commodity promotion can be better integrated with tourism destination marketing to achieve better levels of exposure and sales of Hawaii-grown commodities; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hawaii Tourism Authority submit a report of its findings to this body no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2003; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chief Executive Officer of the Hawaii Tourism Authority
