requesting the auditor to conduct a financial and management audit of Connections, Voyager, Lanikai Elementary, Kanu O Ka Aina, West Hawaii Exploration Academy, and Waters of Life Charter Schools.
WHEREAS, New Century Charter Schools (Charter Schools) are an important part of Hawaii's reform efforts in education; and
WHEREAS, Charter Schools are granted significant flexibility in their operation, including developing curriculum, managing finances, and hiring employees; and
WHEREAS, to ensure that existing Charter Schools are operating properly before more charter schools are allowed to be established, the Legislature enacted a cap of 25 on the number of Charter Schools that may be created; and
WHEREAS, currently, the maximum number of charters have been granted, and it is necessary to conduct a thorough review of selected Charter Schools to monitor their progress and ensure that they are operating efficiently and within the requirements of the charter school laws; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that the Auditor is requested to conduct a financial and management audit of Connections, Voyager, Lanikai Elementary, Kanu O Ka Aina, West Hawaii Exploration Academy, and Waters of Life Charter Schools; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Auditor and the chairpersons of the local boards of Connections, Voyager, Lanikai Elementary, Kanu O Ka Aina, West Hawaii Exploration Academy, and Waters of Life Charter Schools.
