REQUESTING THE CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU TO CONSTRUCT A MULTI-PURPOSE CENTER IN NUUANU VALLEY.
WHEREAS, for a number of years, Nuuanu residents have sought a public gathering place for the community in a safe, user-friendly environment; and
WHEREAS, Community Vision Group No. 12 (Group) requested and received funding to do a site selection study to locate a multi-purpose center (Center) in Nuuanu Valley; and
WHEREAS, the Group worked in collaboration with a consultant hired by the City and County of Honolulu and considered many sites, both public and private, for the location of the Center; and
WHEREAS, a task force sub-committee was formed to review alternative sites for the Center; and
WHEREAS, after careful review of these sites, and evaluations as to the beneficial and detrimental aspects of each site, the Group, along with the task force sub-committee, decided that locating the Center on public land would be less costly and more feasible; and
WHEREAS, additional funding is being requested in FY 2003 to continue the process to implement a plan for the design and construction of the Center; and
WHEREAS, the preferred site is at Nuuanu Valley Park, at the corner of Pali Highway and Puiwa Road, with a land area of 6.2-4 acres; and
WHEREAS, the alternative sites suggested by the Group, along with the task force sub-committee, include sites at Pali Highway above Pulelehua Way with a land area of 73 acres, and Nuuanu Elementary School at the end of Puiwa Lane with a land area of 7.1 acres; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, the Senate concurring, that the City and County of Honolulu is requested to construct a Center on one of the three sites recommended by the Group to serve the recreational, educational, and social needs of the residents of Nuuanu Valley; and
