HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

honoring the 2002 JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF hawaii business hall of fame INDUCTEES.

 

 

WHEREAS, the Hawaii Business Hall of Fame was established in 1990 by Junior Achievement of Hawaii and several other business organizations to honor the state's business leaders who, through their entrepreneurial and civic activities, have made enduring contributions to Hawaii's economy and community and serve as inspirational role models for Hawaii's youth; and

WHEREAS, LLOYD JONES and JON W.H. MARTIN have built Martin & MacArthur into one of the leading businesses in Hawaii, enjoying substantial growth through an eight-year recession and have led in preserving and perpetuating Hawaii's unique koa forests; and

WHEREAS, JON W.H. MARTIN still directs the design and construction of all of Martin & MacArthur's furniture after 41 years in business and has shared his woodworking expertise with the community and served as a judge in the State of Hawaii's annual High School Industrial Arts Competition; and

WHEREAS, LLOYD JONES, as president of the Hawaii Forest Industry Association, initiated marketing programs to benefit all woodworkers in Hawaii and headed the first "Hawaii's Wood Show," now an annual display of the craft of the finest woodworkers in Hawaii; and

WHEREAS, KITTY LAGARETA is chairman and chief operating officer of Communications-Pacific, Inc., a marketing and communications firm, and was president and chief executive officer of Hill & Knowlton, Hawaii when she purchased Communications-Pacific Inc. in 1998; and

WHEREAS, KITTY LAGARETA is a recent past president of the Rotary Club of Honolulu, Hawaii's oldest and largest Rotary Club with more than 400 members, is a founding board member and chair of the Hawaii Industry Venture, a group of business people who provide AIDS/HIV information in the workplace, and is a founding board member of Hawaii's Ronald McDonald House; and

WHEREAS, JEFFREY BLOOM purchased Select Staffing Services in 1986 and Computer Training Academy the next year and is the president of both companies today, and Select Staffing Services has grown to more than 150 temporary hires focused on providing computer technical staff to Hawaii's business community; and

WHEREAS, JEFFREY BLOOM is founder of HiTech Quest, a technology fair to identify and offer scholarships to Hawaii students who showcase internet, networking, and application development projects; and

WHEREAS, the late RICHARD SEIJI MIYASHIRO, twice, in 1946 and 1960, watched his home and business destroyed by tsunamis, and started over after each loss; and

WHEREAS, the late RICHARD SEIJI MIYASHIRO pioneered "fast food" in his Cafe 100 and built a stable and enduring family business; and

WHEREAS, the late ROSWELL M. TOWILL moved to Hawaii in 1923 and several years later, founded a company providing civil engineering and surveying services, and grew the business through the Great Depression, three wars, and economic booms and recessions; and

WHEREAS, the late ROSWELL M. TOWILL served his community as an active participant of may organizations, including the Rotary Club of Honolulu, the Shriners, and established the Roswell and Jeanie Towill Scholarship Program at the University of Hawaii College of Engineering to encourage outstanding students in engineering; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that this body hereby commends JON W.H. MARTIN, LLOYD JONES, KITTY LAGARETA, JEFFREY BLOOM, the late RICHARD S. MIYASHIRO, and the late ROSWELL M. TOWILL for their business success and community service to the people of Hawaii, congratulates them upon being recognized as inductees to the Junior Achievement of Hawaii Business Hall of Fame, and extends to them its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to JON W.H. MARTIN, LLOYD JONES, KITTY LAGARETA, JEFFREY BLOOM, the family of the late RICHARD S. MIYASHIRO, and the family of the late ROSWELL M. TOWILL.
