HONORING LENORA L. LORENZO, MSN, APRN, FPN; SARA FITZPATRICK, MS, CRNA; LOUIS CASORLA, BSN, RN; KAREN MURAI, BSN, RN; GLORIA WOODWELL, RN; AND ELAINE SLAVINSKY, RN, BA, MPH, Ph.D.; FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE NURSING PROFESSION.
WHEREAS, the Legislature is always proud to recognize and honor those outstanding individuals who share their time, energy, and talents to meet the challenging needs of the greater community; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii’s health care professionals attend to the most vital needs of the people of our State by working tirelessly to help those who need medical assistance, as well as ensuring a healthier population by promoting healthy living and providing preventive care; and
WHEREAS, nurses are truly the most important members of Hawaii’s health care community, as they perform the majority of treatment in our hospitals and clinics, and provide numerous indispensable medical functions in areas as diverse as general bedside care and surgery; and
WHEREAS, each year, the Hawaii Nurses Association recognizes the achievements of several nurses in Hawaii from many different areas of nursing who have made a particularly strong contribution to their profession through their dedication, perseverance, and excellence of care; and
WHEREAS, LENORA L. LORENZO, MSN, APRN, FPN, an educator, practitioner, and scholar, exemplifies nursing at its best by teaching CPR and community programs at schools and hospitals and by working with the Waikiki Health Center and the Hawaiian Healing Outreach program at the Ho Ola Like North Shore Clinic, and last year was named the 2000 Teacher of the Year at the University of Phoenix, Nursing Division; and
WHEREAS, SARA FITZPATRICK, MS, CRNA, an advocate for nurses, has served for many years as the Government Relations Chair for the Hawaii Nurses Association, and is the Federal Political Director and Government Relations Chair for the Hawaii Association of Nurse Anesthetists, working tirelessly to build strong relationships between nurses' professional associations and state and federal legislators; and
WHEREAS, LOUIS CASORLA, BSN, RN, a critical-care nurse who helped organize the nurses at Straub Hospital, has proven himself to be a strong patient advocate, caring for his patients with dignity and respect, and has developed a great rapport and understanding as he patiently communicates the details of what can often be frightening medical procedures; and
WHEREAS, KAREN MURAI, BSN, RN, has demonstrated her excellence and commitment to nursing, and the well-being of new mothers and their babies at Kaiser Permanente, and is recognized for her strong communication skills and for her dedication and hard work on the OB/GYN Clinic’s Advise Line, counseling individuals with difficult problems and giving them new encouraging insight; and
WHEREAS, GLORIA WOODWELL, RN, a medical-surgical nurse for over 30 years, who serves as an inspiration to her colleagues and the youth in the community, is well-known for her unwavering commitment toward excellence, focusing her concerns on Hawaii’s nursing shortage which led her to revive the Candy Striper Program at Kona Community Hospital, where she also redesigned and implemented Kona's Youth Volunteer Program, recruiting high school students into nursing careers and forming a program to facilitate a smooth transition of Registered Nurse graduates into Medical-Surgical Nursing Program at Kona Community Hospital; and
WHEREAS, ELAINE SLAVINSKY, RN, BA, MPH, Ph.D., an active volunteer with tireless energy and unwavering commitment to nursing has worked for 21 years in the health care community, first as a Staff Nurse and then working her way up to Director of Nursing at Maui Memorial Medical Center where she continues to volunteer her services and help the community by offering her nursing skills for various organizations such as the Maui Marathon, March of Dimes Walk, and the American Heart Association Walk For Heart; and
WHEREAS, in addition to her nursing responsibilities, ELAINE SLAVINSKY, RN, BA, MPH, Ph.D., also works with the Junior Achievement Program in the Maui public schools, educating students about future education and leadership roles, and assists the Nursing Program Director at Maui Community College in developing a grant to facilitate a 3-month mentoring program with experienced Registered Nurses for new Maui Community College Nursing graduates; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that this body hereby honors and recognizes the notable achievements of the 2001 Hawaii Nurses Association recipients LENORA L. LORENZO, MSN, APRN, FPN, Nurse of the Year; SARA FITZPATRICK, MS, CRNA, Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year; LOUIS CASORLA, BSN, RN, Staff Nurse of the Year; KAREN MURAI, BSN, RN, Staff Nurse of the Year; GLORIA WOODWELL, RN, Nurse Educator of the Year; and ELAINE SLAVINSKY, RN, BA, MPH, Ph.D., Ruth Kemble Award for Volunteer Service of the Year, and extends to them its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all their future endeavors.
