RECOGNIZING PROFESSIONAL SPORTS IN HAWAII AND COMMENDING KIA-MOTOR CORPORATION FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO HAWAII’S TOURISM INDUSTRY.
WHEREAS, the sport of baseball is a world-wide sport, spanning many countries across the globe; and
WHEREAS, many countries utilize baseball as an integral tool for sports marketing; and
WHEREAS, the professional sports industry has grown tremendously throughout the world and especially in Korea; and
WHEREAS, Korean corporations have taken an active role through ownership of various professional sport clubs; and
WHEREAS, sports marketing and professional sports has a direct impact and a potential to boost Hawaii’s tourism industry; and
WHEREAS, KIA-Motors is the largest automobile maker in Korea, and has been the leading manufacturer of compact size commercial vehicles; and
WHEREAS, KIA-Motors has successfully met the challenges of global competition through the advancement of technology; and
WHEREAS, KIA-Motors owns, manages, and operates a professional baseball team, the KIA Tigers; and
WHEREAS, the KIA Tigers have made the State of Hawaii their winter practice destination over the past nine years; and
WHEREAS, the KIA Tigers has been have made considerable economic contributions to Hawaii’s hotel and tourist industry by utilizing fifty rooms for approximately fifty days; and
WHEREAS, the KIA Tigers have been outstanding community members, year in and year out, and serves as a positive example for many other professional sports willing to come to our State; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that this body hereby recognizes and extends its heartfelt aloha and mahalo to the KIA-Motors and the KIA Tigers for making Hawaii their winter home for their baseball practice; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that their continued presence in our State furthers the relationships with Korea and the promotion for other professional sport teams from Korea to utilize our great State as their home away from home.
