HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.R. NO.

22

TWENTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2002

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

requesting the state Attorney General, the United States Department of Justice, and Hawaii's congressional delegation to closely review the proposed merger of Hawaiian and Aloha airlines.

WHEREAS, Hawaii is the most beautiful and unique State in the Nation, in both the make-up of its landscape, and especially in the make-up of its people; and

WHEREAS, any socio-economic situation that affects the elements that make Hawaii such a special place are measured to the most stringent of standards; and

WHEREAS, our one-of-a-kind island state is highly dependent on affordable, frequent, and reliable inter-island air travel for its economic vitality; and

WHEREAS, Hawaiian and Aloha Airlines have proposed a merger that will, in effect, create one inter-island jet air service; and

WHEREAS, a merger between the two airlines would create the potential for a monopolistic market that could dictate fee structure, flight schedules, and levels of service; and

WHEREAS, the proposed merger could have negative repercussions to those employed at Hawaiian and Aloha airlines, as the new company's intention to streamline its operations, eliminate duplicative functions, and downsize its existing aircraft fleet will, in all likelihood, result in job losses numbering in the hundreds; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that this body respectfully requests the state Attorney General, the United States Department of Justice, and Hawaii's Congressional delegation to closely review the proposed merger of Hawaiian and Aloha airlines and consider the best interest and needs of the people of Hawaii as the primary criteria when rendering their position on this merger; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Office of the Attorney General is requested to report its findings and recommendations of its review to the Legislature twenty days before the convening of the Regular Session of 2003; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the state Attorney General, the head of the anti-trust division of the United States Department of Justice and to members of Hawaii's Congressional delegation.
