RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING Nick Jachowski, an international geographic olympiad gold medalist, along with his teacher and adviser judith fukuda.
WHEREAS, the International Geographic Olympiad is held every two years by the National Geographic Society to test the geographic knowledge of student teams from around the globe; and
WHEREAS, vigorous competition between the twelve international teams entered in the 2001 International Geographic Olympiad, held in Vancouver, British Columbia, narrowed the field to the teams from Canada, Hungary, and the United States; and
WHEREAS, the United States team led their nearest competitor, Canada, in the final eight rounds of competition to win the Olympiad Gold Medal; and
WHEREAS, Upcountry Maui's Nicholas Jachowski, Olympiad Gold Medallist, was one of the four members on the United States team that placed first in the 2001 International Geographic Olympiad; and
WHEREAS, to be eligible to try out for the United States team, a student must finish in the top ten at the National Geography Bee and submit a written essay; and
WHEREAS, Judith Fukuda, a veteran teacher at Kalama Intermediate School, spent countless hours assisting Nicholas to prepare for the National Geography Bee competition; and
WHEREAS, Judith Fukuda accompanied Nicholas to Washington, D.C., where he represented Hawaii in the 2001 National Geographic Bee and placed second in the nation; and
WHEREAS, the International Geographic Olympiad was a great learning experience for Nicholas, and as with all participants in the Olympiad, he will share his team's triumph with his classmates on Maui; and
WHEREAS, the cultural diversity and the high academic standards of the International Geographic Olympiad will serve as an incentive for other students to study and learn about the peoples and countries of the world; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that this body recognizes and congratulates Olympiad Gold Medallist Nicholas Jachowski, along with his teacher and adviser Judith Fukuda, on his outstanding achievement as part of the United States team that won the 2001 International Geographic Olympiad; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the parents of Nicholas Jachowski, Nicholas Jachowski, Judith Fukuda, the Principal of Kalama Intermediate School, and the National Geographic Bee Coordinator Mary Francis Higuchi.
