HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

COMMENDING AND HONORING UNITED STATES SENATOR DANIEL K. INOUYE ON HIS SELECTION FOR, AND RECEIPT OF, THE SYLVANUS THAYER AWARD AT THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY AT WEST POINT, NEW YORK.

 

 

WHEREAS, since 1958, the Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy presents the SYLVANUS THAYER AWARD to an outstanding citizen of the United States whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify personal devotion to the ideals expressed in the West Point motto, "Duty, Honor, Country"; and

WHEREAS, past awardees include former presidents George Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, former Secretaries of State George Schultz, Dean Rusk, Cyrus Vance, and John Foster Dulles, and other prominent 20th century American figures such as Bob Hope, Walter Cronkite, David Packard, former chief justice Warren Burger, General Douglas MacArthur, and Neil Armstrong; and

WHEREAS, Senator DANIEL K. INOUYE has literally spent decades serving the people of Hawai`i and the United States, including service with the "Go For Broke" 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the Office of the Prosecutor of the City and County of Honolulu, as a representative in the Hawai`i Territorial House of Representatives in 1954, as a senator in the Hawai`i Territorial Senate, as the first United States Representative from Hawai`i to the United States Congress, and as a United States Senator representing Hawai`i since 1962, bringing the ideals of "Duty", "Honor", and "Country" to each position he held; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that this body honors and recognizes the notable achievements of United States Senator DANIEL K. INOUYE and his unique honor in his selection for, and receipt of, the SYLVANUS THAYER AWARD at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent of the United States Military Academy, the Governor of the State of Hawaii, and the President of the United States.
