honoring and recognizing pacific gateway center for years of dedication and service and contributions to the community.
WHEREAS, in advancing small and minority business development as an engine of community economic growth and examining small business development programs with the objective of amplifying opportunities for self-sufficiency, Pacific Gateway Center has become a landmark of the Kalihi-Palama-Chinatown area; and
WHEREAS, Pacific Gateway Center was founded in 1973 by the Palama Council of Churches in response to the dramatic increase in Asian and Pacific Island immigrants who came to Hawaii and the continental United States; and
WHEREAS, Pacific Gateway Center has created and assisted over two hundred and eighty-five businesses and jobs in service industries, retail businesses, agriculture, aquaculture, manufacturing, and food services, and has nurtured them through a mix of education, training, technical assistance, and access to financial capital for small business sustainability; and
WHEREAS, to address the need for Hawaii's economic diversification, Pacific Gateway Center has taken the initiative to promote a variety of businesses including one that is constructing a certified kitchen incubator, fashion manufacturing, home-based businesses, technology-based businesses, women's accessory manufacturing, culture and arts businesses, and small farming enterprises; and
WHEREAS, Pacific Gateway Center has promoted grassroots economic community development through online discussions on various ideas for the diversification of Hawaii's economy such as knowledge-based initiatives, alternative sources of energy including the hydrogen-powered car and the electric car; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that this body hereby honors and recognizes Pacific Gateway Center for its years of dedication and service and contributions to the community.
