CONGRATULATING THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII RAINBOW WARRIORS MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Men's Basketball team finished the season with a 27-6 record, the best winning record in the school's history; and
WHEREAS, the Warriors were the Western Athletic Conference's regular season co-champions, and the team won its second consecutive Western Athletic Conference tournament, and the squad secured its second consecutive National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament invitation; and
WHEREAS, University of Hawaii Head Coach Riley Wallace was named the Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the third time, and was helped by his indispensable Associate Head Coaches Bob Nash and Jackson Wheeler and Assistant Coach Scott Rigot; and
WHEREAS, Predrag Savovic was named first team All-WAC for the second consecutive year, the first University of Hawaii player to ever do so; and
WHEREAS, the Associated Press also named "Savo" as an honorable mention All-American with his quick shot release and unbridled confidence because "Savo" always wanted the ball in pressure situations and always delivered; and
WHEREAS, sophomore Carl English, in his first year as a starter was named to the All-WAC second team due to his good defense and a spectacular offense repertoire; and
WHEREAS, Tri-Captains Savovic, Mike McIntyre, and Mindaugas Burneika displayed excellent leadership and long-range shooting; Mark Campbell was an outstanding floor general; Phil Martin provided great defense and solid post play; and Haim Shimonovich was an intimidating presence and force in the middle; and
WHEREAS, the team was rounded out by the following players who contributed mightily in practice and their respective roles: Gabe Lombard, Joshua Stanhiser, Milos Zivanovic, Ryne Holliday, Dan Pickart, Paul Jesinskis, Tony Akpan, and crowd favorite Lance Takaki; and
WHEREAS, others who contributed behind the scenes to make this season special are: Len Scaduto, Art Woolaway, Matt Brummel, Brian McMullen, Michel McDivitt, Jed Frost, Melody Toth, Derreck Inouchi, and Bobbie Omoto; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that this body hereby expresses its heartfelt congratulations to the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Men's Basketball Team for winning the Western Athletic Conference championship and for a thrilling season that provided enjoyment to all of Hawaii's citizens; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to Head Coach Riley Wallace, Athletic Director Hugh Yoshida, and President Evan Dobelle of the University of Hawaii.
