CONGRATULATING THE SAINT FRANCIS HEALTHCARE SYSTEM, AND THE SISTERS WHO CONTINUE THEIR TRADITION OF MEDICAL EXCELLENCE AND LEADERSHIP, ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY.
WHEREAS, in 1883, Mother Marianne Cope and six Franciscan Sisters arrived in Honolulu on the Mariposa to care for Hawaiians with Hansen’s disease; and
WHEREAS, the Sisters, in partnership with the Hawaii
Government, quickly created new programs of care for the sick in Honolulu, Kalaupapa, Hilo and Wailuku; and
WHEREAS, on May 9, 1927, the Sisters opened Saint Francis
Hospital, a 70-bed facility in Liliha, to meet the health care needs of the underprivileged who could not afford doctors and hospitals; and
WHEREAS, under the bold leadership and guidance of Mother Marianne Cope and the Sisters, SAINT FRANCIS HEALTHCARE SYSTEM has emerged as a leader and pioneer of health care services in Hawaii, including programs in renal dialysis, organ transplantation, home care, hospice, and cancer rehabilitation; and
WHEREAS, the subsidiaries that comprise the SAINT FRANCIS
HEALTHCARE SYSTEM include: Saint Francis Medical Center in
Honolulu, a licensed 245-bed tertiary care hospital; Saint Francis Medical Center-West, a licensed 136-bed acute care community hospital in Ewa; Saint Francis Community Health Services, the management entity in charge of home health services, hospice services, and community care services; Saint Francis Healthcare Enterprises, Inc., which manages the System’s special joint business ventures; and Saint Francis Healthcare Foundation which consolidates all fundraising efforts and provides community education programs about Saint Francis System subsidiaries; and
WHEREAS, the Franciscan Sisters in Hawaii today continue their legacy of caring and will commemorate the Seventy-fifth Anniversary of the SAINT FRANCIS HEALTHCARE SYSTEM on May 9, 2002; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that this body hereby expresses its sincere congratulations to the SAINT FRANCIS HEALTHCARE SYSTEM, and the Sisters who continue their tradition of medical excellence and leadership, on their Seventy-fifth Anniversary, and extends to them its best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
