RESOLUTION
URGING THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII MEDICAL SCHOOL TO ESTABLISH AN OFFICE OF SMOKING AND HEALTH WITHIN THE NEW HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER.
WHEREAS, during the Third Special Session of 2001, the Legislature appropriated $150,000,000 to finance the cost of construction of a University of Hawaii Health and Wellness Center; and
WHEREAS, the source of these funds are from the Hawaii tobacco settlement special fund; and
WHEREAS, several organizations and community members had strong reservations and concerns about the moneys for the construction of the health and wellness center coming from the tobacco settlement fund; and
WHEREAS, the establishment of an Office of Smoking and Health within the University Health and Wellness Center would insure that the money from the tobacco settlement fund will be used for its intended purpose; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, the Senate concurring, that the Legislature urges the University of Hawaii Medical School to establish an Office of Smoking and Health within the new University Health and Wellness Center; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Dean of the
University of Hawaii Medical School, the President, and the Chairperson of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii.
