HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

URGING HAWAII's CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO SUPPORT an AMENDMENT TO THE CABLE ACT OF 1992 RELATING TO "MUST-CARRY" legislation.

 

 

WHEREAS, broadcasting and other forms of communication aimed at local communities provide an effective vehicle to inform and entertain, as well as to empower citizens to achieve an unparalleled level of community involvement; and

WHEREAS, service to local communities is the touchstone of television broadcasting in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Hispanic broadcasting has an intrinsic value to the Hispanic community, which represents the fifth largest ethnic group in the State of Hawaii with a population of approximately 100,000; and

WHEREAS, television station KHLU-LP Honolulu, an affiliate of UNIVISION Network, the fifth largest U.S. television network, provides the local community with Hispanic television programming and continues to make great strides in offering culturally relevant programming; and

WHEREAS, an amendment to the federal Cable Act of 1992 relating to "must-carry" legislation for television station KHLU-LP Honolulu is essential to preserve and enhance the vitality of local broadcasting and foster a fully competitive marketplace that maximizes consumer choice; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, the Senate concurring, that Hawaii's Congressional Delegation is urged to take all necessary actions to support an amendment to the federal Cable Act of 1992 relating to "must-carry" legislation for television station KHLU-LP Honolulu; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to each member of Hawaii's Congressional Delegation.
