TWENTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2002

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

REQUESTING THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII TO CONSIDER EXPANDING ITS MANOA CAMPUS TO INCREASE ITS HOUSING AND EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES.

WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii at Manoa opened in 1907 and is the oldest campus in the University of Hawaii system; and

WHEREAS, currently, there are approximately seventeen thousand students at the Manoa campus, enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs for degrees through the doctoral level, including law and medicine; and

WHEREAS, the Manoa campus is also known as an international research facility, and extends its services to the community; and

WHEREAS, the Manoa campus is situated on three hundred and twenty acres of land, bordered by residences and businesses; and

WHEREAS, due to this location, the campus has no more room to expand on university-owned land, thus limiting housing and educational facilities on campus; and

WHEREAS, for the University of Hawaii at Manoa to be able to improve its educational standing in the United States and abroad, it must expand physically to be able to accommodate the growing needs of its faculty and students; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, the Senate concurring, that the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii is requested to exercise the state power of eminent domain to institute proceedings to purchase land on the Ewa and Diamond Head sides of University Avenue for the purpose of expanding the Manoa campus to improve its educational facilities and the quality of education to better serve its mission; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii.
