HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

2416

TWENTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2002

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York and Washington D.C. had far reaching short term impact for every state in the Union, including Hawaii, and will generate long term consequences that will affect the lives of future generations in this state and country. The legislature also finds that in the face of continued attacks, both real and rhetorical, against the values and beliefs the United States of America were founded upon, our people reflect upon and draw upon those traditions, values, and beliefs for strength in increasingly trying times. The legislature also finds that continued validation of those values and beliefs by future generations will help insure perpetuation of that which is the essence of the United States of America. The purpose of this Act is to mandate a time during the school day where public schools shall recite the Pledge of Allegiance, an act that validates the values and beliefs that are the essence of the United States of America.

SECTION 2. Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§302A- Pledge of Allegiance. All public schools in the State of Hawaii shall provide a specific time during the school day to recite the Pledge of Allegiance."

SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
