AGENDA:

    Improving teacher quality and increasing the number of certified teachers in
Hawaii are two important issues  that  greatly  affect the future advancement of
the educational system.  Representatives  from  the  Education Commission of the
States, Kay McClenney and Michael Allen, will discuss issues related to quality-
teaching reforms at  the  national  level.    Also,  Derek  Minakami and Maryann
Joseph, the first of Hawaii's teachers to be certified by the National Board for
Professional  Teaching  Standards  (NBPTS),  will  give  an  overview  of  their
experiences throughout the NBPTS certification process.

AGENDA:

The purpose of this  briefing  is  to  receive  a  presentation on the status of
recycling programs in Hawaii.  This  briefing  is being scheduled in response to
the increased costs  of  shipping  for  materials  to  recycling  centers on the
mainland and in Asia.    Discussion  on  options  for recycling will follow, and
representatives from  the  shipping  industry,  recyclers,  and  others  will be
available to answer questions.
