                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

RELATING TO THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
   SESQUICENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY IN HAWAII. 


 1       WHEREAS, on December 12, 1850, the first missionaries from
 2   The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints arrived in the
 3   Sandwich Islands; and
 4   
 5       WHEREAS, following a brief period of "gathering" to the
 6   Palawai area of Lana`i in the 1850's and early 1860's, the
 7   Latter-Day Saints Church purchased the traditional ahupua`a of
 8   La`iewai and La`iemalo`o on January 26, 1865; and
 9   
10       WHEREAS, Latter-Day Saints Church congregations and chapels
11   are found throughout the islands, and La`ie has been a focal
12   point and home of the La`ie Hawai`i Temple; and
13   
14       WHEREAS, Joseph F. Smith served three missions in Hawai`i
15   and spoke fluent Hawaiian, and dedicated the temple site in
16   La`ie when he was the 6th President of the Latter-Day Saints
17   Church, and the temple was completed and dedicated on
18   Thanksgiving Day 1919 and is still in use today; and
19   
20       WHEREAS, it was the first Latter-Day Saints Church temple
21   built outside of the continental United States and for many
22   years served faithful Church members throughout the Pacific
23   Islands and Asia; and
24   
25       WHEREAS, other important Latter-Day Saints Church
26   facilities include the Honolulu Tabernacle, completed in 1941,
27   and the Kona Hawai`i Temple in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of
28   Hawai`i, dedicated by Latter-Day Saints Church President Gordon
29   B. Hinckley on January 23, 2000; and
30   
31       WHEREAS, historically, Latter-Day Saints Church teachings
32   emphasize family values, responsibility to the community,
33   missionary work and emergency preparedness as well as knowledge
34   of family history and genealogical research; and

 2       WHEREAS, there are now approximately 60,000 Latter-Day
 3   Saints living in Hawai`i, coming from all walks of life,
 4   including prominent government, business and institutional
 5   leaders and many notable artists and musicians, both past and
 6   present; now, therefore,
 7   
 8       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
 9   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
10   of 2000, that this body hereby congratulates and commends The
11   Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on the 150th
12   Anniversary of its presence in Hawai`i, for its outstanding
13   accomplishment as well as its many other examples of
14   leadership, fine moral character and its special contributions
15   to Hawai`i and her people, and expresses its warmest aloha and
16   best wishes for continued success in all its future endeavors.
